In the theme of B Noir of the 40s!

Across the Hall (2009)

Every now and then a story with dark themes, characters with dark pasts, shady morals comes along. It usually comes and goes without creating much fanfare! This is one of those. Well, that does not mean that the movie is of poor quality. On the contrary, it excels in its own way and excites its own admirers of its own specific genre.

Set in a run-down hotel, Riverview Hotel, which had seen better times with its peeling wallpaper and lazy workers. The peculiar angle of cinematography, like the angle of the hotel signboard, set the tone for a good film noir. In keeping with some noirs of the 50s where loud jazz music was introduced, the filmmakers decided to infuse loud (a tad too loud) background score which I thought killed the suspense.

As expected the film noir takes a twist here and there, the story moves in a non-linear fashion, going in flashbacks and flash-forwards with certain scenes recurring and the murderer goes scot-free.
Julian gets a call from his frantic friend, Terry, that his fiancee was cheating on him. He managed to track her down to a room in the Riverview Hotel. As Terry mentioned that he had a gun (stolen Julian's gun), watching her and was obviously under the influence of intoxicants, Julian feared for the worst.

What Terry does not know is that Julian is the backstabber and the room was supposed to be their rendezvous!

The mysterious butler (he did not do it!)
Julian sneaks into the hotel undetected by the night staff but is spotted by an ex-girlfriend who was staying in one of the rooms. Terry confronts his fiancee, June. In the struggle to prove a point, she is fatally wounded. Then comes the uncertainty of how to cover up the crime. After much running around and tense moments, to cut the story short, Julian is framed for a crime he did not commit. Terry, who initially did not know the identity of his beau's mysterious lover, found out about Julian's treacherous act when he found his phone in June's room when Julian was never supposed to be there.

Terry walks away satisfied and Julian is in a betwixt as all evidence point at him as the guilty party!

Nothing great but watchable.

Various shades of gray

Like my father who carries on his whole life with blinkers, minding his own work and not wanting to know other people's problems, I seem to have fallen into the same trap (or is a blessing?). Feeling that I have enough on my plate, the last thing I want to be dragged into is other people's melancholy. However, every now and then, I do get sucked into this quicksand. The best I can do is walk around the quicksand and maintaining my foot rooted on solid ground. And believe you me, it is an art.

Two individuals had things going on fine in their business venture. After umpteen years of smooth sailing, their yacht hit a rough patch. Their term of the deal appears unsavoury to both parties.

The justification in supporting their side of the bargain is the typical textbook description of mirror image conflict. I am no skilled negotiator or arbitrator. So, the most I can do is lent them my ears and utter the occasional nods, Ummm, 'oh!', 'is it so?' and the occasional smile.

The last time I heard, equilibrium had been reached. They met somewhere in the middle, and life goes on.

The lesson of the day - Partnership is tricky. We have to anticipate eventualities and make periodic changes to satisfy all parties involved.

Feel free to be free...

Another pastime that I occasionally indulge in is T-shirt watching. Some of the things written on them could be quite entertaining. Of course, some of them could be construed as sexual harassment if uttered by an individual. As it only written and not uttered, nobody gives a second look. Actually it is meant to be looked again and again! T-shirts with messages like 'Wish these were brains', 'Hammer says "You can't touch these"' would fit this bill. My favorite must be 'My girlfriend went to Vegas and all she got me is this lousy T-shirt'. Not to forget the abbreviations of the word 'Fornication Under Consent of the King' purposefully spelt as the abbreviations of 'French Connection United Kingdom' to  give a false sense of grandiosity to its wearer. Grandiose feeling by its wearer who is awed by his the fact that he is not wearing a garment but a statement. A statement that he dares to be different and fight against the self imposed worldly prejudices against him!
Just the other day, I saw this man who from his appearance as a vagabond with his disheveled hair, unshaven 1 week's stubble, more of a beard, worn out Japanese rubber slippers which had seen much better days, walking aimlessly with his gaze far into the horizon donning an equally worn out T-shirt screaming with red clenched fist and the fiery red words 'Walk for Freedom' emblazoned on it.
My curious mind wondered....
What kind of freedom is he looking for? Is he not free to wonder where he fancied - unlike a time not so distant in the past, where signboards like 'Dogs and so and so not allowed' were placed outside reputable restaurants. Is he not free to be restricted to dress in a particular way or manner (lack of) of grooming? Is he free to speak as he pleases? Is he not free to pursue his dreams if he had any?
Even the epitome of freedom, the bird, is not totally free. He is not free from his daily obligations to look for food. He is definitely not free from predators and pranking kids.
Maybe our homosapien friend wants to be free from the curse of the cycle of karma!
For all you know, the T-shirt could be a discard from a formerly radical thinking individual who had turned his back and to the dark side of capitalism because it is more self gratifying...

Sour to the grave

As far as I can remember, it has been the practice of people to respect the dead. No matter how bad a person had been in his or her lifetime, they are generally forgiven. Only the nicest things are highlighted and the not so pleasant one are conveniently forgotten or omitted in the eulogy.
It is accepted that the person in question would be adequately dealt with in the afterlife by the powers above and the aid of The Book.
As a deviant from the norm, people of the working class of Britain, mainly miners, have been keeping their grudge of discontent all these years and have no qualms displaying it now. Even amongst the vast majority of the 'others', there are those who feel that the world now is a worse place than before she came to the picture. With the combo of Thatcherism-Reaganism, where greed is good, we are now left with a messy world of living in credit and mortgage.
I suppose the changes in the world are inevitable with or without Thatcher. Desperate situations demand desperate measures! Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, when economy was unresuscitable, the majority thought the grocer's daughter with her degree had the right chemistry to spark to the laissez faire British economy. And she sure did- her way!
For that matter, the electorates are to be blamed for collectively deciding on such a leader in desperation to come out of their economic doldrums. Just like the Germans for choosing a certain dropout from Art School as their leader......

Cows, BS and mule!

Now that the news of the forthcoming 13th general elections is on every body's mind, it is only appropriate to mention something on Malaysian politics.
Some people talk passionately about politics. Now, with the dissolution of the Parliament, politics is at the tip of every body's tongue. People of all ethnicity and social class, as it appears to me, seem more courteous to each other as though have teamed together to fight for the betterment of the country at large.

One particularly peculiar observation that I realised is that whenever you are embroiled in heated political discussion, say in a social function - birthday, wedding reception, dinner etcetera, the person who leads the conversation with much passion, offering intricate inside information would invariably not be registered as a voter with the Election Council!

Of course, you have to ask him point blank on the face to skewer this information. And you have to indulge in a lot of face reading to authenticate the truth of his statement. Be prepared too for lashing if the storyteller is the easily offended type or is a bona fide voter!
9/10 you would get a sheepish smile with the reply he had not registered for the flimsiest of reasons and justifications. At the end of the day, he would emphasise that he only feeds on the crumbs of the droppings of the present day leaders, whosoever holds the helm. One devil would not be more righteous than the other. He may add that "Cows may come and cows may go, but this bull here (obviously referring to himself as a muscular alpha male type and not referring to his words that fall from his mouth like droppings, i.e. BS!) stays forever! But lest he forgot that cows are sensitive words in Malaysian politics that can lead him to trouble.

Come 5th of May 2013, these big talkers cannot complain much if the rest of the voting community decides to elect a mule as their leaders! These whiners just have to pick up their crumbs or droppings and move on....bray, bray, bray...

No perfect system

The century of self (2002)
#4. Eight people sipping wine in Kittering

The final episode continues to show that businessmen / people in power continue to use the inner desires of people to sell their products / brand of democracy. People with left minded politics in the US and UK had to forgo their ideology of fighting for the working class to satisfy the increasing appetite of individualism in the society. Through the deployment of focus groups, a method employed by marketeers, the politicians (yearning to win elections), discovered the wishes of the masses.
The ruling elites in the UK were more reluctant initially to conform to the whims of the public. They had always been very paternalistic in their way of ruling the public. They decided on what was good for the people. When the economy took a downturn, the brand of politics evolved to tailor for the inner desires of people.
Newspapers, which was supposed to be impartial became corrupted with hints of commercialism beginning to fill the editorials.
The victors of the elections also discovered that the people were fickle-minded. The same people who wanted tax cuts also wanted better public services - they wanted the cake and also eat it!
At the end of the day, we are still left in a quagmire. There is no perfect system to rule people and the politicians are left to rule with populist measures!

Pilgrims gather to watch as an infertile worshiper is lowered into a baptism pool with a rope held by priests. According to local faith the holy water has fertility powers that will allow her to conceive. Every year, just before Christmas day, thousands of pious Christian orthodox worshipers make a pilgrimage to Lalibela, a small town in Ethiopia's highlands, known as Jerusalem of Africa or Black Jerusalem. A man is arrested by the Rochester police in Rochester, New York, after having assaulted his father with a samurai sword. The crescent is home to 27 percent of the city's residents and 80 percent of the city's homicides. The reasons behind the burst of violence include the lagging upstate economy, a steady migration of residents to the suburbs and a growing number of abandoned houses prone to become centers of drug sales and use. "It's an area of great poverty and high consumption rate of drugs which fuels an incredibly high number of homicides," said the Rochester police chief.
