The Fourth Estate has vested interest

Richard Jewell (2019)
Director: Clint Eastwood

The press and the print media are often referred to as the 'Fourth Estate' or 'Fourth Power' for a reason. It is supposed to act as an extension of the arms of governance after the legislation, execution and the judiciary branch of Government of rule via indirect public influence.

It traditionally played the role of the eye of the public to create a check and balance system of the ruling Government. Over the years, we have noticed that it is no longer working towards the well-being of the common man, but rather have the welfare of the financiers at heart. With financiers having vested interest in how a piece of particular news should be presented, the truth is somehow lost in the rabble-rousing. The same message can be displayed by different stations leaving totally different impressions on the public.

So, leave to the public to assess what is right and which is fake, you say. History has proven time and again that people are fickle-minded. Like Pavlov's dog, they can be easily conditioned by their masters. Their opinion changes anywhere the wind blows. With access to social media to opine their two-cents worth literally at their fingertips, arranging a trial by media is an easy task.

The question of exposing too much 'truth' to the public domain and having a trial by media has been popping quite rampantly in Malaysia after the change of Government. Traditionally, in Malaysia, the Fourth Estate has been functioning more like a Fourth Branch of the Government, working well as a propaganda machine of the ruling Government. The old Government is feeling the heat as many of their shenanigans out in the open. They cry foul citing loss of sovereignty of the nation as we go on a rampage washing dirty linen in public.

One thing people forget is that foreign investors come to our country not because we are trustworthy and virtuous. They come here precisely for the opposite reasons. Our leaders are easy to be bought over, and everything has a price.

The modern society talks about the need for a free press and freedom of information. The film shows one of the dangers of the unabated flow of information.

Richard Jewell is a timid man who lives with his mother and goes on by working as a security officer. It was 1996 and Atlanta was hosting the Centennial Olympics. During the tour of his duty as a security helper in a stadium, he notices an unattended bag. He alerted the police officers who confirmed that it contained a bomb. Jewell helped to evacuate the public from danger, prevent a catastrophe. He is hailed as a hero, and his pictures are plastered on all newspaper. Three days later, everything takes a 180-degree turn. He is reported to be a possible prime suspect as the bomber in the bombing. News leaks that FBI thought that Jewell fit the profile of a lone attacker - single white male, living with his mother, fascinated with guns who clamours a law enforcement career.

The rest of the movie is to shows the humiliation, public scrutiny and trial by media that Jewell and his mother endure. Under the name of national security and the thirst for the round-the-clock instant information, people's life is turned topsy-turvy.

The film created controversy when it suggested that the journalist, Kathy Scruggs, who leaked the information about the FBI investigations on Jewell being the possible suspect obtained it by providing sexual favours.

The saga affected Jewell and Scruggs profoundly. Both had premature deaths. Jewell succumbed to heart ailments, and Scruggs went on to be bogged with depression. She died on morphine overdose. The possibility of suicide was also considered.

Jewell's name did get cleared by FBI after all. In his time, he sued many newspapers and news networks including CNN. He got a fat compensation but, it seems, the bulk of it went to the lawyers' fees.

That is the bane of modern living - create a molehill out of nothing, make a big deal out of it, talk about principle and doing the 'right' thing but basically doing nothing but create a whole lot of mess. In comes the lawyers (or maybe bankers too) as the knights in shining armours.  They prolong the confusion, build up anxiety and leave with a load of money, giving the impression of saving the day. To those affected, nothing really changes.

Weapons gone astray!

Sensitive topic - Readers' discretion advised

A Mosque in Munich (2010)
Author: Ian Johnson

When 9-11 attacks came about, investigations traced the perpetrators of sleeper cells spending a time of their lifetimes in Germany. These terrorist group did not spring up just before attacks on the American soil. They, in fact, have a very long past, going as far back as the Bolshevik revolution.

When Communist Soviet took over the predominantly Muslim lands in the Caucasus, collectively known as Western Turkestan, the area was filled with adrenaline-filled Muslim fighters who wanted to liberate their lands from their godless rulers. They were collectively known as the Prometheans, the mythical Greek hero who defied Zeus to save humanity.

This golden opportunity was grasped by Wehrmacht, the unified WW2 German Army to aid in their attack of Russia. As is common knowledge, many Muslim scholars, including the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, soar at the thought of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after WW1, decided to pour their support on the side of the AxisPower.

Betting on the wrong horse, they lost more than just their homeland. Many of the Muslim freedom fighters ended up as refugees in Germany. By 1950s, West Germany, especially places like Munich, had undergone an economic transformation. The miracle of German tenacity and engineering marvel saw industrial giants like Siemen and financial titans like Allianz proving their strength. Many Turkish immigrants soon start coming into West Germany.
After WW2, communism became the bogeyman, and there was an urgent need to keep activities behind the Iron Curtain under check. Many of these ex-Soviet Muslims became the eyes and the ears of the CIA and West Germany. They were rolled in the CIA-sponsored propaganda Radio Liberty and Radio Free Europe as well as many of its espionage work. Along the way, the CIA decided to use Islam as their weapon to go after the non-believer Communists. They are said to create ruckus in Mekkah during a Haj season to highlight injustices against Muslims in the Soviet Union. At the 1955 Bandung Conference,  their members also created an embarrassing moment for the Soviets.

The idea of having a mosque was drummed in by the Muslim community of Germany to garner more support to this end. Somehow, there soon came to be a tussle for leadership as members of the Muslim Brotherhood gained a stronghold in the Munich Mosque donation collection and construction.

The Muslim Brotherhood movement, known for its doublespeak, saying one thing to one party and denying it to another, managed to hoodwink the Americans into believing that they could speak for the general world Muslim population. In reality, they advocated a rather conservative and domineering form of Islam; a kind which tends to control all aspects of day-to-day living and has no reservations against terrorism or killing of its enemies.

The Munich Mosque was finally opened in 1973.

The Muslim Brotherhood, with the cooperation of the US intelligence agencies, managed to outmanoeuvre the ex-Nazi soldiers to control the mosque. As time went, The Muslim Brotherhood gained more traction in the world politics. The conservative, arch-Catholic city in Bavaria soon became a centre of radical Islam.

It is war, but where is the enemy?

The Looming Tower (2018)

Sun Tzu's 'Art of War' suggests the best way to win a war against your enemy is when they (the enemy) do not realise that they are not at war. "Know your enemy know your environment" he added. Despite this knowledge, the mighty Ming Dynasty fell to the lowly Manchus.

Twenty years ago, two then Colonels in the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Qiao Lang and Wang Xiansui published a book named 'Unrestricted Warfare'. Here these two officers outlined ways to overcome a mighty force like the USA. It seems that the CIA also got hold of this book and was reading material for their trainees. In a gist, it proposes trapping the country into indebtedness, economically and militarily. Cost of waging a traditional war may prove too costly, money-wise, and annihilation of the planet as we know it.

Probably the other enemies of the USA have also got hold this knowledge. With the widespread of information on the net, nothing is sacrosanct anymore. After all the meddling of the Americans to almost every country in the world, in the name of keeping world peace, upholding liberty and freedom, the victims are biting back.

The miniseries narrate the countdown to the biggest assault on the American soil after Pearl Harbour. Garbled up intelligence, concealing of information between CIA and FBI and fight for supremacy amongst civil servants all led to the tragedy. It is a moving account of the lives and tribulations of many real people who worked in these agencies. A good watch.

Truth is a luxury?

Tashkent Files (2019)

It was 1966. India had just won a war with Pakistan after marching into Lahore with their tanks a year earlier. With his slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kishan' (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer), Lal Bahadur Shastri, tried to instil nationalism and boost food production. He remains one of the most liked and cleanest PM. He shares his birthdate with MK Gandhi, but only a few remember.

He goes to Tashkent (then in Soviet Russia, now Uzbekistan) to sign a declaration of peace with Pakistan with a clean bill of health but returns in a body bag. Just hours prior to sudden breathlessness in the wee of hours of the morning, he had called home.

A national leader's death, a man of his stature, would typically require pre-set protocols to be followed. Unfortunately, in spite of his family's request for a post mortem, it was not done. Their insistence that Shashtri had skin discolouration and there were cuts over his neck area which were passed off as usual postmortem by a panel of English doctors.

Even KGB had suspected poisoning as a cause of death. The butler who served the PM with his nightcap was interrogated in detail on the day of death, but details of this cross-examination mysteriously went missing.

Back home, even though experts agreed that toxicological studies were mandatory to rule out poisoning, none were performed.

With the passage of time, the calls for wanting to know what actually happened in Tashkent was forgotten. Some claim that the people in power systemically suppressed it. That changed with the democratisation of information. Google was God-sent! That too and the secret KGB files that were exposed after the collapse of the Soviet Union by Vasili Mitrokhin. Retired CIA agent, Robert Crowley's 2009 interview on the Agency's involvement in the assassination of Homi Bhabha and Shastri is out in the open.

The internet not only tells of various points of view of a single event but also remains a fertile ground for conspiracy theories and mongers of fake news, just to prove their point. The premise of this film is just to put on the table all these theories for us to decide whether there is such a thing as the truth or knowing the real truth is a luxury that eludes everyone.

The records related to Shastri's death inquiry are precariously missing. Post mortem was never done. Toxicology screening was never performed. The two witnesses at the time of Shastri's death who were to appear at an inquiry many years later had mysteriously been hit by cars. Dr Chugh, his physician, died on the spot. The other witness, his helper, Ramnath, had memory loss.

The CIA, not wanting another nuclear power in the region after China detonated its first atomic bomb in 1964, orchestrated Homi Bhabha's plane crash in the Alps. Shastri, who had earlier incisively brought the Pakistanis to their knees, was viewed by the Americans as a dangerous man. His close liaison with Bhabha, India's father of Nuclear Science, made them hot under their collars.

According to Mitrokhin Archive, Moscow had a very cordial relationship with Nehru and India. It is said that Russia had a strong influence on the politics of India. It backed Gulzarilal and Sastri's candidature for the PM to keep the right-wing Hindu traditionalist for succeeding after Nehru's eclipse. It is also suggested that Indira Gandhi (codenamed VANO by the KGB) was under their payroll. During her later tenure, the Russians had a free hand in policing, defence and information dissemination in India.

It is interesting to note that there is a significant disparity in how ratings for this movie are given in different media platforms. If one were to get all their juices from the mainstream media, with the assigned ratings of 0.5 to 2/5, one would go home with the idea that it a thrashy piece of Bollywood wasteland. On Twitter, however, the landscape is quite different. Scores of good reviews 3.5-4.5/5 sing praises of its high standards of storytelling and direction. I understand not everybody can appreciate the sight of half a dozen India men and women of different expertise sitting a room engaged in a shouting match. Many may not enjoy the cerebral nature of some of its discussions and the glaring absence of songs and dances in this offering. There surely must be a time and place for everything.

What really happened to Sashtri in Tashkent remains shrouded in mystery till today. Perhaps there was a concerted effort to keep his legacy in the shadows. A well-liked leader, an honest, conscientious, decisive leader who preaches peace with his neighbours is no good for creating a despotic regime. Both Pakistan and India resolve their differences - unthinkable!  Maybe that is why he had to be terminated to be replaced by a subservient servant of the Cabal!

He stirred the hornet's nest!

The Mattei Affair (Italian, Il Caso Mattei; 1972)

Heard about this guy through Hussain Najadi's autobiography. Enrico Mattei, a self made entrepreneur from a humble beginning. He started working in tannery industry at the age of 15 only to climb the social ladder to be a threat to the Anglo-American oil cartel.

His path crossed with Najadi when both were trying to get Kuwait's oil industry going. Unlike Najadi who missed an ill-fated flight to cheat death in 1963, Mattei succumbed to one.
This offering is an Italian documentary trying to outline the events leading to his untimely death. Foul play has always been suggested. Even the journalist who tried to investigate his death mysteriously disappeared and was never found.

Enrico Mattei
Growing up in WW2 Italy, he became Mussolini's Fascist party inactive member. He later became a Christian Democrat and a nationalist. He tried to sell the idea of mining methane gas in Northern Italy. Even though initially ridiculed as a Fascist's propaganda, he managed to drill natural gas and a little petrol there, stimulating local industry. Through companies ENI and AGIP, he tried to drill petrol in countries like Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Iran and China.

He incurred the wrath of the kingpin of the oil industries at time who dictated how oil should be drilled and how much should be paid to the producing nations. He offered higher remuneration and even financed pre-Independent Algeria.

Mattei named the oil cartel as the 'Seven Sisters' - 7 Anglo American companies including Standard Oil, Shell, Texaco, Gulf Oil etc.
Even though the cause of his plane crash remain a mystery, the consensus is that a bomb could have been planted in the tail of plane either by the CIA, French secret police or the Sicilian mafia.

A little cat arrives where a few big dogs are eating in a pot. The dogs attack him and toss him away. We Italians are like that little cat: in that pot there is oil for everybody, but someone does not want to let us get close to it.
